Through an opportunity from the Minnesota Department of Health, Redwood and Renville Public Health will offer free radon kits to homeowners in Redwood and Renville counties during January of 2012, which is Radon Action Month.
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recommends that all homes be tested for radon gas. It’s the only way to know if your home has an elevated level of radon gas, which can cause lung cancer. Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that occurs naturally in Minnesota soils and can enter homes primarily through cracks and openings in basement or foundation floors and walls.
A radon test kit can be obtained at the Public Health offices in Redwood Falls or Olivia. Stop in or call 507-637-4041 or 320-523-2570 for more information.
MDH estimates that one in three existing Minnesota homes have radon levels that pose a significant health risk after many years of exposure. Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and more than 21,000 deaths are attributed to radon gas each year.
