ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Derrick Rose and Luol Deng

each scored 21 points and the Chicago Bulls held off a

fourth-quarter surge by Orlando to beat the Magic 97-83 for their

sixth straight victory. The 7-1 Bulls are off to their best start

since winning 12 of 13 to open the 1996-97 season at the end of the

Michael Jordan era.

 


STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State has hired New England

Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien as its head coach, the

first change in leadership for the storied football program in

nearly a half-century. Last night's announcement caps a turbulent

two-month period that began with the firing of Hall of Famer Joe

Paterno on Nov. 9 in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges

against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

 


ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Joe Adams' 51-yard punt return for a

touchdown sparked Arkansas to a 29-16 victory over Kansas State in

the Cotton Bowl. The Razorbacks tied a school record for victories

by finishing 11-2, with the losses coming to top-rated LSU and No.

2 Alabama, the teams playing Monday night for the BCS national

championship.

 


EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Oregon running back LaMichael James says he

is skipping his senior year and declaring himself eligible for the

NFL draft. The 5-foot-9, 195-pound All-American ran for 1,805 yards

this season and led the nation with a per-game average of just over

150 yards rushing.

 


NEW YORK (AP) - The NHL said that it won't go forward with its

realignment plan and modified playoff format next season after the

players' association rejected the changes. The NHL said it will

maintain its current alignment and playoff format next season.
