LOS ANGELES (AP) - It took three games, but Mike Brown finally

has earned his first victory as L.A. Lakers coach. Playing their

third game in three nights, the Lakers got 26 points from Kobe

Bryant and outclassed the Utah Jazz 96-71 last night at Staples

Center.

 


MIAMI (AP) - The Miami Heat have started fast, winning two games

handily and only trailing once -- by two points, for all of 14

seconds. LeBron James scored 26 points, rookie point guard Norris

Cole scored 14 of his 20 in the fourth quarter, and the Heat nearly

blew a 20-point lead before beating the Boston Celtics 115-107.

 


SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Alex Dragicevich hit

four 3-pointers and scored a career-high 22 points to lead Notre

Dame to a 72-59 win over No. 22 Pittsburgh in the Big East opener

for both teams. That's 28 straight home wins for the Irish.

 


UNDATED (AP)--Purdue and N.C. State were winners in bowl games

yesterday. The Boilermakers held off Western Michigan 37-32 in the

Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit and the Wolfpack beat

Louisville 31-24 in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C.

 


DENVER (AP) - In the NHL, Evander Kane scored two goals, Ondrej

Pavelec made 32 saves, and the Winnipeg

Jets handed the Colorado Avalanche their first home loss in a

month, 4-1. That snapped the Avs' eight-game home win streak.
