Melvin (Bud) Just





Melvin “Bud” Just, 90, of Redwood Falls died Sunday, December 11, 2011 at Seasons in Redwood Falls. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 15, 2011 from St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at Crestlawn Gardens, rural Redwood Falls. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, from 4 until 7 p.m., at the Nelson-Martin Funeral Home in Redwood Falls and will continue on Thursday at the church for one hour prior to services.

Melvin Fred Just, the son of Paul and Frieda (Schaffran) Just, was born June 25, 1921 in Wood Lake. He was baptized on July 27, 1921 and confirmed on August 14, 1935. Bud grew up on a farm near Wood Lake and received his formal education in Wood Lake Public and parochial schools. He was inducted into the United States Army on August 28, 1942 and served as a cook and an MP with Company D, 745th Military Police Battalion. His company served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater in the Ryukyus Campaign of the Battle for Okinawa. Bud was honorably discharged in November 27, 1945, with the rank of Tech-5.

On September 15, 1950, Bud married Elaine Raddatz at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls. Bud was employed at Zieske Lumber Yard in Wabasso and Bostsford Lumber Yard in Redwood Falls. He then began working as the maintenance engineer at the Redwood County Nursing Home, and then at the Wood Dale Nursing Home. Bud was employed at the nursing home for 25 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, secretary of the church council and on the finance committee. Bud was a life member of the VFW and the DAV.

He is survived by his wife Elaine of Redwood Falls; children Roger (Lois) Just of Park Rapids, Dewan Just of Littleton, Colorado, and Rita (Alan) Wieneke of Redwood falls; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Bud was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
