Natl. Sports Headlines for Friday, Dec. 9th:

PITTSBURGH (AP) - The legend of Ben Roethlisberger

grew a bit more last night as the gimpy

Steelers quarterback played through a painful high ankle sprain to

lead Pittsburgh to a 14-3 win over Cleveland in the renewal of that

Rust Belt rivalry. Big Ben completed 17 of 22 passes for 280 yards

and two TDs to help the 10-3 Steelers gain a half-game lead over

Baltimore atop the AFC North.

UNDATED (AP) -Forget that proposed Chris Paul to the L.A. Lakers

trade. An NBA spokesman says the league, which owns the New Orleans

Hornets, won't pull the trigger on that proposed trade for what he

called "basketball reasons."

UNDATED (AP) -With NBA players and owners ratifying a new

10-year labor agreement yesterday, the way is clear to open

training camps and free agency today. NBA Commissioner David Stern

is putting his best face on the 161-day labor lockout and is saying

fans will see an improved league in coming years.

DALLAS (AP) - The L.A. Angels beat out the Miami Marlins as the

biggest spenders at baseball's winter meetings. The Halos announced

they had agreed to terms with free agent first baseman Albert

Pujols on a 10-year, $254 million contract and pitcher

C.J. Wilson on a five-year, $75 million deal.

SAN FRANCISO (AP) - Federal prosecutors are urging a judge to

send former baseball slugger Barry Bonds to prison for 15 months.

In court documents filed late yesterday, prosecutors objected to a

recommendation by a federal probation officer that Bonds get only

probation when he's sentenced for obstruction of justice on Dec. 16

for his role in a doping investigation.
