EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Kyle Brodziak scored the winner in the

sixth round of the shootout last night to give the Minnesota Wild a

3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Brodziak and Devin Setoguchi had

goals in regulation for the Wild, who moved into first place in the

NHL standings. Niklas Backstrom made 28 saves for the victory.

 


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Rodney Williams scored 14 points last night

as Minnesota edged past Virginia Tech 58-55 in the Big Ten/ACC

Challenge. Williams also had eight rebounds and two blocks while

filling in for injured star Trevor Mbakwe. Julian Welch hit two

free throws in the final 20 seconds to give the Golden Gophers the

lead for good.

 


EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - The depleted Minnesota Vikings are

preparing to play the streaking Denver Broncos this weekend. The

Vikings placed four key players on injured reserve Tuesday, and

started practicing yesterday with changes at both wide receiver and

defensive back. Coach Leslie Frazier says safety Tyrell Johnson

will need six months to recover from surgery to repair a torn

hamstring.

 


PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP) - Wisconsin running back Montee Ball has

been named the Big Ten's offensive player of the year. Ball set a

conference record with 34 touchdowns this season and leads the

nation with 17.2 points per game. Penn State tackle Devon Still

picked up the top honor on defense.
