MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University head women’s basketball coach Allison Kruger has announced the signing of one student-athlete for the 2012-13 season. Megan DeRuyter of Holland, Minn. has signed a letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic career at SMSU.
DeRuyter, a 5-foot-10 guard at Southwest Minnesota Christian High School, has also earned letters in volleyball, track and cross-country. She has been a starter on the varsity basketball team for four seasons.
“Megan is a great local player with a lot of potential and has a bright future as a Mustang.” Kruger said. “She is a taller guard that is very strong, athletic and versatile in many aspects. Megan has the ability to score at the 3-point line and is tough around the basket because of her strength and athleticism.”
During her junior season, DeRuyter averaged 14.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.4 steals. She has been named to the all-conference basketball team twice during her career. DeRuyter has also earned five all-conference honors in track and field and one in volleyball. She currently holds the school record at Southwest Minnesota Christian for points in a game.
“We are excited to add Megan as our second commitment in this class and she gives us the opportunity to move a few returners to other positions that will balance out our roster.”
DeRuyter was a recipient of the Spotlight on Scholarship award for having a GPA of 3.5 or higher and has been on the honor roll throughout her high school career.
“Off the court Megan fits our team and the dynamic we are trying to create within our program,” Kruger said. “She is a well-rounded person that works hard and will have no trouble adjusting to our system. We look for Megan to have a good senior season and come ready next fall to compete for playing time.”
SMSU is 1-1 on the season and will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. to partake in a Thanksgiving Tournament at Nova Southeastern University.
