AMES, Iowa (AP) - Second-ranked Oklahoma State has severely

damaged its chances of a BCS title game berth by falling to Iowa

State 37-31 in double-overtime. Jeff Woody won it by scoring on a

four-yard run shortly after Brandon Weeded was picked off by

Leonard Johnson. The Cowboys led 24-7 in the third quarter before

falling to 10-1 overall, 7-1 in the Big 12.

 


STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The NCAA will examine whether Penn

State broke any rules with its handling of a child sex abuse

scandal that has shocked the campus and led to the dismissal of

head football coach Joe Paterno. The NCAA will look at "Penn

State's exercise of institutional control over its intercollegiate

athletics programs" in the case of Jerry Sandusky, the former

defensive coordinator accused of 40 counts of child sex abuse.

Meanwhile, the 84-year-old Paterno is undergoing treatment for lung

cancer, but his son says doctors are optimistic he'll make a full

recovery.

 


LOS ANGELES (AP) - Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp has

agreed to an eight-year, $160 million contract, matching the

seventh-highest in major league history. The 27-year-old Kemp led

the NL with 39 home runs and 126 RBIs while batting .324 and

stealing 40 bases this year.

 


CHICAGO (AP) - The Cubs introduced new manager Dale Sveum

at a Friday news conference and the former big leaguer vows

to change the culture of a club that has endured a 103-year

championship drought. The Cubs and Boston Red Sox were both

interested in Sveum, who interviewed twice with each of the teams.

 


LOS ANGELES (AP) - Former UCLA co-captain and men's basketball

coach Walt Hazzard has died at age 69. Hazzard's family said he had

been recuperating for a long time from complications following

heart surgery. Hazzard was a member of the Bruins' first NCAA title

team in 1964 and later coached the squad in the 1980s following a

10-year NBA career.
