MN Sports Headlines for Friday, Nov. 18th:

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Niklas Backstrom stopped 27 shots for his

second shutout of the season, and Devin Setoguchi

scored the game's only goal to give the

Minnesota Wild a 1-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night.

Backstrom earned his 24th NHL shutout. Minnesota's won three

straight and eight of 10.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Trevor Mbakwe had 20 points

and 10 rebounds for Minnesota and was 16 for 18 from the free-throw

line to help the Gophers beat Fairfield 67-to-57 last night.

Minnesota committed 23 turnovers and was limited mostly to Mbakwe's

free throws and a handful of putback dunks, but that was all the

offense it needed to stop the Stags.

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - Oakland left tackle Jared Veldheer knows

he has a monumental task trying to slow down the Vikings' Jared

Allen, who's the NFL sacks leader. The second-year offensive

lineman calls Allen one of the best in the league. But he says he

thinks the Raiders offense could suffer if they have to send help

his way and hopes the team lets him go it alone.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Joel Maturi's future as

Minnesota's athletics director remains undecided beyond this school

year. The 66-year-old is in his 10th year in charge of Gophers

sports, but his contract ends next summer. In an interview, Maturi

says his job status is a "two-way street."
