Natl. Sports Headlines for Wednesday, Nov. 9th:

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - The latest development in the Penn

State sex-abuse scandal is the school trustees will appoint a

special committee to investigate the case. Coach Joe Paterno is

fighting for his job amid "eroding" support from Penn State's

board of trustees and a widening sex-abuse scandal and possible

cover-up centered on former assistant and onetime heir apparent

Jerry Sandusky.

NEW YORK (AP) - Today is another deadline day in the NBA labor

talks. Commissioner David Stern has given the players until today

to accept the league's latest offer, or he says the league will

water down its proposals even further in future negotiations.

NEW YORK (AP) - NBA players have made it clear to players

association president Derek Fisher that they don't want to accept

the NBA's latest deal and they do not fear Commissioner David

Stern's ultimatum, either. Fisher says the current offer on the

table from the NBA is "one we cannot accept."

WASHINGTON (AP) - Michael Ryder scored twice, Adam Burish had

the tiebreaking goal early in the third period, and the surprising

Dallas Stars beat Washington 5-2 to snap the Capitals' six-game

home winning streak. The Stars have won four in a row and own the

best record in the NHL at 11-3.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - At his introductory press conference on Monday,

new St. Louis Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said it would take just one

practice to fix the Blues' dreadful power play. Chris Stewart

proved his new coach right when he scored on the power play to end

a 10-game scoring drought in the Blues' 3-0 win over Chicago in

Hitchcock's first game since replacing David Payne.
