School levy referendum votes on Tuesday

Nearly 130 districts around Minnesota are seeking a levy referendum this fall, the highest number in more than a decade, according to the Minnesota School Boards Association.
State funding for K-12 education has increased slightly in the last eight years by 11.4 percent, according to Michael Howard, spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Education. But, in an email, Howard wrote that "the rate of inflation has been more than twice the rate at which education funding has grown."
That's where districts turn to their community to fill in the gap. The average levy referendum last year asked for roughly $926 per student. Last November, 76 schools districts had referendums. Only 41 districts were able to pass their referendums.

BOLD School is asking to renew a $700 per pupil levy, 6 year term.

Cedar Mountain School is asking for a 10 year term for renewal of $290 per pupil levy.

Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop is asking for an increase of $400 to $870 per pupil for 10 years.

Redwood Area School is asking for a renewal of a $500 per pupil levy and a new $400 additional per pupil levy for 10 years each.

Sleepy Eye Public School is asking for a $750 per pupil levy for 7 years with no current levy in place and an additional $250 per pupil.

The average operating levy across Minnesota is $936 per pupil unit.
