CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Ryan Longwell's field goal with less than

three minutes left gave the Minnesota Vikings a 24-21 win over the

Carolina Panthers yesterday. Cam Newton put the Panthers in

position to tie the game, but Olindo Mare missed a 31-yard field

goal attempt with 26 seconds left. Adrian Peterson scored two

touchdowns as the Vikings snapped a two-game skid.

 


DENVER (AP) - Matthew Stafford threw for 267 yards and three

touchdowns yesterday in the Detroit Lions' 45-10 win over the

Denver Broncos. Calvin Johnson, Titus Young and Tony Scheffler each

caught scores for the Lions. Detroit's defense sacked Tim Tebow

seven times and picked him off once.

 


LAS VEGAS (AP) - Jason Line won his second Pro Stock

championship yesterday after advancing to the semifinals of the

NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event at Las Vegas Motor

Speedway. The Minnesota native will start the season finale in two

weeks with a 199-point lead over teammate Greg Anderson. Line will

receive a $250,000 bonus from NHRA.

 


NEW YORK (AP) - A person familiar with the situation tells The

Associated Press the New York Yankees have made a contract offer to

pitcher CC Sabathia. The All-Star must decide today whether to opt

out of the $92 million and four years remaining on his current

deal. If he opts out, Sabathia would become the top pitcher on the

free-agent market.
