ST. LOUIS. (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals have gone from barely

making the wild card to World Series champions for the 11th time

after beating the Texas Rangers 6-2 in Game 7 of the 107th World

Series. It's their second World Series title in six years with

third baseman David Freese the Series MVP.

 


ST. LOUIS (AP) - Baseball commissioner Bud Selig

says he expects he will have to decide what compensation the Boston

Red Sox should receive for allowing general manager Theo Epstein to

leave and join the Chicago Cubs. Epstein quit Boston with a year on

his contract to become the president of baseball operations for the

Cubs.

 


NEW YORK (AP) - NBA Commissioner David Stern has canceled all

NBA games through Nov. 30 following the second breakdown of labor

talks in a week. NBA owners are insisting on a 50-50 split of

revenues, while players last formally proposed they get 52.5

percent, leaving them about $100 million apart annually.

 


ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Big 12 appears to be resigned to losing

Missouri. The Big 12 has announced unanimous approval to accept

West Virginia effective July 1, joining newcomer TCU in the Big 12.

 


UNDATED (AP) - With five starters back from the team that

reached the NCAA regional finals last year, North Carolina is the

preseason No.1 in the AP men's college basketball poll. Kentucky is

a distant second, followed by Ohio State, defending NCAA champion

Connecticut and Syracuse rounding out the top five.
