Sugar Beet Coop and County come to agreement

Tuesday the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative and Renville County announced that they reached an agreement to resolve a long standing disagreement over the value of the Cooperative’s property in Renville.

The terms of the settlement include an agreement that the property valuation, for the tax years of 2013 through 2017, will be $41 million. Addition terms of the settlement include the dismissal of claims regarding the property valuations for 2004 though 2006 and 2009 through 2011. No additional taxes will be owed by the Cooperative to Renville County for those years.

Renville County Commissioner John Stahl commented that the issue has been a long and trying one but they are looking forward to continued close cooperation between the two parties, as the Cooperative is probably the largest employer in Renville County and contributes to the economic vitality of Renville County.

Kevin Thompsen, President and CEO of the Cooperative stated that the process has been lengthy and expensive one for both parties. Thompsen said they look forward to moving ahead on some combined goals.
