Natl. Sports Headlines for Tuesday, Oct. 25th:

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - The Texas Rangers are within one victory

of their first World Series championship after rallying for a 4-2

win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 5. Mike Napoli

provided a tiebreaking, two-run double in the eighth

inning to give the Rangers a three-games-to-two lead. Adrian Beltre

and Mitch Moreland hit solo homers for the Rangers,

who rallied after the Cardinals scratched out a pair of

second-inning runs to take a 2-0 lead.

BOSTON (AP) - Ben Cherington is set to be introduced as the new

general manager of the Boston Red Sox today. He replaces his former

boss, Theo Epstein, who resigned from the Red Sox on Friday to

become president of baseball operations for the Cubs. Cherington

has been handling many of the duties of general manager because

Epstein's departure had been expected.

CLEVELAND (AP) - Jim Thome  isn't ready to retire,

telling the City Club of Cleveland he still has the passion to play

and continue his pursuit of an elusive World Series ring. The

41-year-old Thome is eighth all time with 604 home runs and

returned to the Indians late this season. He becomes a free agent

after the World Series.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Josh Scobee drilled four

field goals and the Jacksonville Jaguars allowed just 146 total

yards in a 12-7 upset win over Baltimore. Scobee hit a pair of

54-yard attempts and a 51-yard boot in helping the Jags end a

five-game losing streak. Maurice Jones-Drew ran for 105 yards

against the NFL's top run defense as the Jaguars dropped the Ravens

out of first place in the AFC North.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz

says quarterback Matthew Stafford is "day to day" after hurting

his right ankle late in Sunday's loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Schwartz wouldn't go into details about any X-rays or MRI

yesterday, although he did hint that the injury wasn't overly

serious.
