Charges being considered in New Ulm fatal

A prosecutor is reviewing evidence in a fatal New Ulm police car crash to determine whether any charges are warranted.

The Minnesota State Patrol conducted the investigation into the July crash which killed 82-year-old Myra Meyer, of New Ulm, and her 60-year-old son, Brian Wichmann, of Mankato. Meyer was driving the car that was struck by a police squad as she was waiting to turn into a driveway.
Rasmussen is a patrol officer who had seven years of law enforcement experience and 18 months with the New Ulm Police Department at the time of the crash.

Part of the review of the investigative report involves determining whether any criminal charges are warranted against New Ulm Police Officer Mathew Rasmussen, but Redwood County Attorney Steven Collins said it’s too early to say whether charges are possible.

Redwood County Attorney Steven Collins is reviewing video recordings and hundreds of photos and is talking with investigators. The State Patrol completed its investigation last week.
Steven Collins expects his review will take at least seven days.
