Natl. Sports Headlines for Thursday, Sept. 29th:

UNDATED (AP) - Evan Longoria and Dan Johnson powered Tampa Bay

into the American League playoffs last night, leading an 8-7 win

over the New York Yankees while Boston was losing to Baltimore 4-3.

Longoria won it with a walk-off homer in the 12th inning after

providing a three-run blast that capped a six-run eighth. Tampa Bay

was one strike from a 7-6 loss until Johnson homered to force extra

innings.

UNDATED (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals rode Chris Carpenter's

arm and bat into the National League playoffs as wild card

champions. Carpenter poked an RBI single and struck out 11 in a

two-hitter to lead the Cards to an 8-0 pounding of Houston. The

Redbirds actually claimed the wild card after Hunter Pence hit an

RBI single in the 13th to give Philadelphia a 4-3 win over Atlanta,

ending the Braves' season.

MIAMI (AP) - Ozzie Guillen was introduced as the

Florida Marlins' new manager Wednesday, confirming what Guillen had

announced two days earlier. Guillen's Web site leaked the news late

Monday that he had agreed to take the job, and he tweeted Tuesday

that he was in Miami and "ready to go." He led the White Sox to

the 2005 World Series championship and was with Chicago for eight

seasons before he asked to be let out of his contract on Monday.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick

practiced yesterday and said there's a "100 percent" chance he

starts Sunday against San Francisco. Vick was initially diagnosed

with a broken, non-throwing hand after getting hurt in a 29-16 loss

to the New York Giants three days ago. But tests on Monday revealed

he had a contusion on his right hand.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The attorney for Jordan Jefferson says

LSU has lifted its suspension imposed on the quarterback after a

grand jury reduced charges stemming from Jefferson's involvement in

a bar fight. Jefferson is now charged with simple battery in

connection with the Aug. 19 brawl. The grand jury Wednesday also

cleared reserve linebacker Josh Johns of charges.
