Natl. Sports Headlines for Tuesday, Sept. 27th:

UNDATED (AP) - The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox are dead

even in the American League wild-card standings this morning. Rays

ace James Shields came within one out of his league-leading 12th

complete game, limiting the Bombers to two runs and six hits in a

5-2 win over the New York Yankees. The Red Sox fell into a tie for

the wild card as Josh Beckett surrendered six runs in six innings

of a 6-3 loss at Baltimore.

UNDATED (AP) - Atlanta and St. Louis lost last night, keeping

the Braves one game ahead of the Cardinals for the National League

wild card with two games to play. Cliff Lee helped Philadelphia

knock off the Braves 4-2, allowing five hits in six innings for his

17th win. Angel Sanchez laid down an RBI bunt in the bottom of the

10th to lift Houston past the Cards 5-4, preventing the Redbirds

from pulling even with the Braves.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago White Sox will have a new manager

today after releasing Ozzie Guillen from the remainder

of his contract. Guillen had one year left in his deal and was

seeking an extension with a pay raise. He is the only White Sox

skipper since 1917 to lead the team to a World Series title,

winning it in 2005.

IRVING, Texas (AP) - Tony Romo played through a broken rib last

night and completed 22 of his 36 passes for 255 yards as the Dallas

Cowboys outlasted Washington 18-16. Rookie Dan Bailey put the

Cowboys ahead for good with his sixth field goal of the night, a

40-yarder with 1:57 remaining. Felix Jones ran for a career-high

115 yards despite separating his shoulder against San Francisco the

previous game.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Eagles say a CT scan shows

Michael Vick's right hand is bruised and not broken, as was

originally believed after he was forced from Sunday's loss to the

division rival New York Giants in the fourth quarter. Philadelphia

coach Andy Reid says his star quarterback's non-throwing hand is

swollen and Vick's status for this week's game against the San

Francisco 49ers is up in the air.
