Natl. Sports Headlines for Friday, Sept. 23rd:

UNDATED (AP) - The Big 12 dumped its embattled commissioner Dan

Beebe and said nine schools had pledged to give their TV rights to

the conference for the next six years. That's a step intended to

preserve a fractured league that has lost two members in the past

year and is expected to lose another by next summer.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Cardinals start the final weekend

of the regular season trailing the Atlanta Braves by two games in

the NL wild card with six games left. The Cards suffered a costly

loss yesterday, giving up six runs in the ninth inning in an 8-6

loss to the New York Mets.

ATLANTA (AP) - Keegan Bradley starts second round play at the

Tour Championship with a two-shot lead following his opening round

6-under 64. Luke Donald, Jason Dufner and Chez Reavie

are tied for second, two shots back.

NEW YORK (AP) - A person with knowledge of the plans says the

NBA will cancel training camps and some preseason games today after

failing to reach a new labor deal with its players. Training camps

were expected to begin Oct. 3, but Commissioner David Stern is

acknowledging that "the calendar is not our friend," in the hopes

of playing a complete NBA season.

NEW YORK (AP) - Brendan Shanahan has handed out his first

suspensions since becoming the NHL's dean of discipline. He's

banned Calgary forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond

for the rest of the preseason and the Flames' first

game of the regular season. He's also suspended Philadelphia

forward Jody Shelley for the rest of the preseason and first five

games of the regular season for a hit on Toronto's Darryl Boyce.
