Here are some tidbits about Alzheimers Disease:
-Alzheimer’s disease is NOT "normal old age". Every elderly individual does not have this disease. Thus, it is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms which could suggest this disease and consult a qualified medical practitioner to assess your loved one.
- In Alzheimer’s disease, memory for old events is preserved till the advanced stages of the disease. In the early stages, the ability to learn new things is impaired. Since the common man assumes that memory for old events is more important, some patients are not brought to the doctor in the early stages of the disease.
-The progressive deterioration of the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia is irreversible and cannot be cured. Early diagnosis and treatment can only help to provide some relief and give those involved enough time to plan for future needs.
-It is a misconception to think idea that Alzheimer’s disease is genetically inherited. In fact, only 5% of Alzheimer’s—early onset disease, generally before the age of 65—can be passed from one generation to another. In 95% of Alzheimer’s disease cases, however, the disease is not genetically inherited.
-A healthy diet and lifestyle can enhance natural defenses against dementia. Not smoking, exercising regularly, doing away with fatty foods, and keeping mentally stimulated into old age may lower the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.
-There currently are no cures to Alzheimer’s disease. People have thought that many drugs could help to slow or stop Alzheimer’s disease, but the only way to slow Alzheimer’s currently is a healthy diet and exercise of body and mind. No drugs currently approved by the FDA can cure or reverse Alzheimer’s disease. They can alleviate symptoms which can help people cope with the disease much better, but they are still searching for the cure.
