OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Detroit Tigers knocked off the
Oakland Athletics 3-1 last night to become the first major league
team to wrap up a division title this season. Doug Fister allowed
three hits in eight innings before Jose Valverde picked up his 45th
save in as many chances for the AL Central champions. Wilson
Betimit's RBI triple snapped a 1-1 tie in the sixth
before Don Kelly homered in the seventh.
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Kellen Moore completed 32 of 42 passes for
455 yards and five touchdowns as fourth-ranked Boise State shook
off a slow start to pound Toledo 40-15. Doug Martin turned a short
screen pass into a 71-yard TD that put the Broncos up 13-6 late in
the first quarter. The Broncos won easily despite gaining just 26
rushing yards in the first half.
UNDATED (AP) - The NFL has fined three players for unnecessary
roughness during the Baltimore Ravens' 35-7 win over the Pittsburgh
Steelers. Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo
was fined $15,000 and Steelers safety Troy
Polamalu was docked $15,000 for horse-collar tackles. And Steelers
cornerback Ike Taylor was fined $15,000 for head-butting a Ravens
player.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Los Angeles court commissioner has approved
Ron Artest's petition to change his name to Metta
World Peace. The bid by the Lakers forward for the new name had
been delayed by three weeks so he could resolve unpaid traffic
tickets. A Superior Court spokeswoman says World Peace is Artest's
new last name.
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) - Michael Waltrip said yesterday he's had
discussions with both Clint Bowyer and a potential sponsor for the
driver. Bowyer is in the final year of his contract with Richard
Childress Racing, and talks on an extension deteriorated over the
last month.
