MN Sports Headlines for Saturday, Sept. 17th:


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Jim Thome hit home run No. 603 in his return

to Minnesota, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Twins 7-6 last

night. Thome homered in the ninth inning against Joe Nathan for a

7-4 lead, just Thome's second home run since Cleveland reacquired

him on Aug. 25. The 41-year-old spent his first 12 seasons with

Cleveland and more than 1 1-2 years with the Twins.

 


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Lindsay Whalen scored 20 points yesterday to

lead the Minnesota Lynx past the San Antonio Silver Stars 66-65 in

Game 1 of their WNBA Western Conference semifinal. Seimone Augustus

added 19 points and Rebekkah Brunson grabbed 14 rebounds. Game 2

will be Sunday afternoon in San Antonio, where the Lynx can close

out the first playoff series victory in franchise history.

 


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer is likely

to miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a mild

case of pneumonia. Minnesota athletic trainer Rick McWane said

yesterday that Mauer received the diagnosis at the Mayo Clinic on

Thursday and doctors recommended medication and two weeks of rest.

The Twins have 14 games remaining before the season concludes on

Sept. 28.

 


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The wife of former Minnesota Viking Joe

Senser has made her first court appearance in a fatal hit-and-run

crash in Minneapolis. Amy Senser's appearance lasted less than a

minute yesterday in Hennepin County District Court. The judge asked

her if she had read the charge, and she said she had. The judge set

a pretrial hearing for Oct. 18.
