Student proficiency in math and reading for school districts should be released by the Minnesota Department of Education today.
The MCA II test data are used to determine a district’s progress under the federal government’s No Child Left Behind initiative.
Statewide, students showed slight improvement in reading, while 11th-grade students made a 5 percentage point improvement in math proficiency compared to 2010 results, according to the state department of education.
All Minnesota students in grades three through eight were given a new, more rigorous math assessment test that will set a baseline for future results, but it doesn’t allow for comparison to previous years.
Despite the poor results for some area schools on the MCA II tests, education experts caution that the data shouldn’t be used to compare schools or to assess the performance of a district.
MCA II test results are used to determine how state and federal funding should be allocated to reduce the achievement gap.
Some school district have indicated that there are a number of measurements in place that can give a far better and far large picture of how the district is doing,
