The causes of the Dakota War in 1862 were many and complicated.
Historian John LaBatte will examine why some Dakota Indians wanted war
while others opposed war.
At least 9 of John's Dakota and white ancestors were involved in the
Dakota War in 1862.
The program on September 17, 2011 will begin at 1:00 in the Fort
Ridgely historic commissary building.
At 2:30 Mr. Labatte will present a Battlefield Tour of the August 20 &
22, 1862 battles on Fort Ridgely parade ground.
Historic Fort Ridgely is recognized by the National Park Service as a
National Battlefield and is listed twice on the National Register of
Historic Places.
MN State Park permit is required for this event.
Regular admission fees apply to the historic site for the presentations.
MHS and NCHS members can join the program and tour at no additional fee.
