Natl. Sports Headlines for Thursday, Sept. 8th:

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - After an offseason dominated by a labor

lockout, the NFL gets attention back where it wants it to be

focused--on the field. The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay

Packers are slight favorites over the New Orleans Saints, the

champions of two seasons ago, in the NFL season-opener from Lambeau

Field tonight.

NEW YORK (AP) - Less than 11 hours after New York completed a

rain-delayed victory, both teams were back at it with the Baltimore

Orioles squeezing out a 5-4 win over the Yankees in 11 innings. The

Orioles used up eight pitchers and the Yanks six in the finale of a

three-game set at Yankee Stadium. The teams are now in Baltimore

where they play this afternoon in a makeup of an Aug. 27 rainout

caused by Hurricane Irene.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies' lead in the NL

Central is 10-1/2 games following their three-game sweep of Atlanta

and last night's 3-2 win on pinch-hitter Ross Gload's RBI single in

the ninth. The Phils' magic number for clinching their fifth

straight NL East title is 12.

NEW YORK (AP) - Two straight days of rainouts and more rain in

the forecast have the U.S. Open tennis tournament organizers facing

a scheduling nightmare to somehow get back to a normal schedule.

Matches are scheduled to resume today at 11 a.m. Eastern time -

weather permitting.

UNDATED (AP) - From Anaheim to Montreal, the world's best hockey

players are struggling to comprehend a shocking loss to their sport

after a chartered Russian plane carrying the Kontinental Hockey

League's Lokomotiv Yaroslavl team crashed, killing 43 of the 45

people on board. On the plane also were several NHL veterans. The

air crash comes after the sudden offseason deaths of three other

NHL players.
