MN Sports Headlines for Thursday, Sept. 8th:


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota avoided a four-game sweep last

night by beating the Chicago White Sox 5-4. Danny Valencia and

Chris Parmelee each had two RBIs for the Twins. Chicago starter

John Danks lost his second straight start after allowing five runs

on six hits.

 


ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Former Minnesota Wild player Pavol

Demitra is among those killed in a Russian plane crash. At least 43

people died yesterday when the jet carrying a top hockey team went

down shortly after takeoff. Demitra played two seasons for the

Wild, and also had stints with St. Louis and Vancouver.

 


EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Marcus Sherels will returns punts for

the Minnesota Vikings to start the season. Coach Leslie Frazier

says the undrafted rookie out of Minnesota will get the first shot,

with Greg Camarillo also available. Frazier also says the team

hasn't decided who will return kickoffs.

 


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Minnesota men's basketball begins the season

with back-to-back road games against Illinois and Michigan. The

Gophers face Michigan, Penn State, Purdue and Ohio State each once,

and take on every other Big Ten opponent twice during the regular

season. Minnesota will also be part of the Old Spice Classic in

Florida over Thanksgiving weekend.
