SMSU volleyball remains sixth in AVCA top 25



LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team remains ranked No. 6 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Top 25 poll after going 3-1 to open the 2011 season. The Mustangs were ranked in a tie for No. 6 with Nebraksa-Kearney in the AVCA preseason poll.

Concordia-St. Paul earned all 32 first-place votes and 800 points to retain the No. 1 ranking in the country. SMSU earned 620 points and was one of five Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schools to be ranked in the top 25.

Minnesota Duluth earned 603 points and moved up five spots earning the No. 7 spot, Wayne State dropped from No. 9 to No. 10 and Minnesota State, Mankato moved up four spots from No. 16 to No. 12.

Southwest Minnesota State has now been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 for 69 consecutive weeks dating back to Sept. 5, 2006.

SMSU returns to action on Friday, competing in the prestigious Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver, Colo. SMSU opens play on Friday, Sept. 9 taking on Lock Haven (Pa.) at noon MT before playing tournament host No. 11 Metro State (Colo.) at 7 p.m. MT.
