MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -There was a close call for a perfect game in

baseball last night as White Sox rookie Zach Stewart took a perfect

game into the eighth inning and finished with a one-hitter. Chicago

completed a doubleheader sweep of the Minnesota Twins, 4-0. The

lone Minnesota hit was Danny Valencia's leadoff double in the

eighth spoiled the right-hander's bid to become the 21st rookie in

major league history to throw a no-hitter.

 


ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mark Trumbo continued his torrid rookie

season with a two-run homer and an RBI double, Vernon Wells hit his

20th home run, and the L.A. Angels beat the Seattle Mariners 7-3 to

move within 2 1/2 games of first place Texas in the AL West. The

Angels capitalized on Texas' 5-1 loss at Tampa Bay and moved a

season-best 13 games over .500 at 77-64.

 


COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Nick Ferrara kicked a 32-yard field

goal with 1:39 left, Danny O'Brien threw for 348 yards and a

touchdown, and Maryland beat short-handed Miami 32-24 Monday night

in coach Randy Edsall's first game with the Terrapins. Miami was

playing its first game under Al Golden without eight suspended

players, including quarterback Jacory Harris,

linebacker Sean Spence and defensive linemen Marcus Forston and

Adewale Ojomo.

 


HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) - NASCAR is hoping to get in its Sprint Cup

race at Atlanta Motor Speedway that was postponed Sunday night

because of drenching rains in the Atlanta area. Kasey Kahne

is the pole-sitter for this morning's scheduled race.

 


NEW YORK (AP) - Top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki

rallied to beat Svetlana Kuznetsova 

6-7, 7-5, 6-1 in a fourth round U.S. Open match.

She finished with 26 unforced errors compared to 78 for the

17th-seeded Kuznetsova, a two-time major champion.
