Fourth singles player Erika Ries had to wait over 3 hours on Thursday before getting a chance to take the court for her first varsity match so it was only fitting that her match tonight went over 3 hours and 3 sets. She fell to another freshman from LCCML in Kori Lowe. Not only was it the deciding match, but it went right down to the wire with the remaining members of both teams watching from the side. Lowe took the first set 6-3 before Erika came back to pick up a 7-3 tie-break win in the second set. The score sat at 5-5 in the deciding 3rd set before Lowe took the last two games. I was very impressed with the composure that both of the inexperienced freshman played with in such a clutch situation. They held up better than many seasoned veterans would under that pressure and both gave everything they had until the final point.
River Valley is now 1-1 on the season.
The Wildcat junior varsity travels to St. James on Saturday where they will take on St. Peter, St. James Black and St. James Red. First matches begin at 9am. Next action for the varsity is Tuesday when River Valley will host Maple River in Sleepy Eye at 4:30.
