The state fire marshal will investigate an early morning fire that destroyed a farmer-owned grain elevator in western Minnesota.
Firefighters were called around 2:10 a.m. Thursday to the Farmers Elevator Co. in Eldred, about 60 miles north of Moorhead. The elevator was already fully engulfed in flames. Crookston Fire Capt. Brian Halos says crews were able to keep the fire from spreading to nearby houses and buildings. Fire departments from Climax, Fisher, Mentor and Crookston responded. The elevator was full of corn and soybeans. Manager Dan Grunewald says the fire leveled a portion of the
elevator that was built in 1958. Grunewald says that members of the farmer-owned business plan to rebuild.
