Walter Tomschin, 92, of Springfield, MN died on Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield, MN.

Visitation will be on Friday, August 26, 2011 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield, MN. Visitation will continue on Saturday, August 27, 2011 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at New Hope Lutheran in Comfrey, MN.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 10:30 AM at New Hope Lutheran in Comfrey, MN.

The Clergy will be Pastor James Lindgren.

Interment will be at the Springfield City Cemetery with military honors.

Walter George Tomschin was born December 10, 1918 to Walter and Minnie (Elsing) Tomschin at their home in Bashaw Township. He was baptized on February 12, 1919 and confirmed on April 28, 1940 at Salem Lutheran Church in Comfrey, MN. On November 3, 1941 Walter entered the Army at Cheyenne, WY. Walter was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. On July
6, 1942, he married Margaret Streich in San Antonio. Walter served in the European Theatre, Invasion of Normandy and Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged on October 4, 1945 at T5 grade. After his discharge the couple moved to Sanborn for a short time and then moved to a farm in Bashaw Township in 1947. In 1952 they moved to the current farm site in Bashaw Township. Walter served on the Country School District 215 Board from 1957 - 1965 as clerk. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church since 1954 in which he served as president, treasurer and trustee, and was a current member of New Hope Lutheran Church where he served on the building committee. He was also a member of the Springfield American Legion Post 257. Walter enjoyed traveling, playing cards, latch hook, carpentry, collecting trains, fishing, snowmobiling and bowling.

Walter Tomschin died Tuesday, August 26, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield, MN at the age of 92.

Walter is survived by his children - Walter and wife Sheila Tomschin of Philomath, OR; Robert and wife Carol Tomschin of Bingham Lake; Michael and Cheryl Tomschin of Springfield; Margery Hoppner of Santa Rosa, CA; 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; siblings - Ann and Ralph Holberg; John and Mildred Tomschin all of Minneapolis; Louis and Phyllis Tomschin of Alden, MN; Alice and Dennis Shumway of Heron Lake, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents - Walter and Minnie; wife - Margaret in 2002; brothers - Charles, Clarence and Ben and wife Neva Tomschin; sisters - Viola and husband Merlin Miller and Dorothy and husband Leonard Wersal.
