Natl. Sports Headlines for Tuesday, Aug. 23rd:


PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Pittsburgh Steelers have ironed out a new

contract with linebacker Lawrence Timmons. It's a six-year deal

that will pay Timmons $50 million through 2016. He is the second

linebacker to sign an extension with the Steelers in the last

month. Teammate LaMarr Woodley agreed to a six-year, $61.5 million

contract on Aug. 5.

 


EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - The New York Giants suffered a

serious blow last night as they beat Chicago in pre-season play.

Starting cornerback Terrell Thomas tore the anterior cruciate

ligament in his right knee and is done for the season. He was the

Giants leading tackler last season.

 


CLEVELAND (AP) - The Indians and Mariners have a game this

afternoon in Cleveland. The Indians, who have fallen five and

a-half games back of first place Detroit in the American League

Central, are sending Justin Masterson to the mound. He has suffered

only one loss in the last two months.

 


ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Detroit ace Justin Verlander is a 19

game winner. He picked up the victory last night as the Tigers beat

the Rays 5-2. Verlander had eight strikeouts and is the winningest

pitcher in Major League Baseball.

 


TOKYO (AP) - The University of Hawaii is moving forward with

plans to play a regular-season football game in Japan within the

next few years. Jim Donovan, the school's athletic director,

revealed the prospect while in Osaka over the weekend for a men's

basketball game. The Rainbow Warriors could play a football game in

Japan as soon as 2014.
