MN Sports Headlines for Tuesday, Aug. 23rd:


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - J.J. Hardy and Matt Wieters both homered as

the Baltimore Orioles beat the Minnesota Twins 4-1 last night.

Baltimore starter Zach Britton allowed one run on six hits for his

first win in ten weeks. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire and third

baseman Danny Valencia were ejected in the eighth inning after

Valencia struck out.

 


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Twins have placed Nick Blackburn on the

15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm. Blackburn

exited Sunday's game early, and will meet with a specialist today.

Anthony Swarzak will take Blackburn's spot in the Twins pitching

rotation.

 


EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle

Kevin Williams is dealing with a foot injury, and the team wants

him to see a specialist. Williams didn't practice yesterday and

wore a protective sleeve on his right leg. Coach Leslie Frazier

says the team will also place offensive lineman Scott Kooistra on

injured reserve because of a neck injury.

 


ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Justin Verlander picked up his 19th

win of the season as the Detroit Tigers topped the Tampa Bay Rays

5-2 last night. Verlander allowed one run on three hits to win his

seventh consecutive start. Catcher Alex Avila belted his 15th home

run of the year for the AL Central-leading Tigers.
