SMSU womens golf reports for fall practice

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University women's golf team has reported for 2011 fall practice as the team prepares for its first competition on Sept. 3.

Ross Webskowski, in his eighth season as head coach, has 10 players and eight returning letterwinners on this year's fall roster with one senior, three juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen.

SMSU will compete in eight different events this fall, including two at the Marshall Golf Club. SMSU will host the final 18 holes of the Maverick/Mustang dual on Sept. 4 and will host the annual 36-hole Mustang Invite on Sept. 24-25.  The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference fall championship will be held Oct. 8-9 at The Jewel in Lake City, Minn.

Senior KC Kane, a three-time All-NSIC honoree, leads SMSU after compiling a team-low 81.5 stroke average in 19 rounds last season with five top-five finishes.  Kane begins her senior season as the program's all-time leader in stroke average at 80.7 in 59 career rounds.  Also returning is junior Krista Weiszhaar, who finished second on the squad a season ago with an 83.6 stroke average and a pair of top-five finishes.

During his seven seasons as head coach, Webskowksi has led SMSU to a pair of NSIC championships and five NCAA regional tournaments.  SMSU finished seventh at the 2011 NCAA region championship in St. Paul.

SMSU opens the season on Sept. 3-4 with a dual versus Minnesota State, Mankato.  The first 18 holes will be played Sept. 3 at the New Ulm Country Club in New Ulm, with the final 18 holes played in Marshall on Sept. 4.
