Minnesota's new budget slices spending on much of the health care industry - but chiropractors came out ahead in some areas, thanks to an influential lawmaker who also works as a chiropractor.
The Star Tribune reported Thursday (http://bit.ly/pd2zDF) that the new health care law doubles the number of covered chiropractic visits for some patients and extends subsidized coverage to acupuncture treatments done by chiropractors and others.
The bill's sponsor is Rep. Jim Abeler, an Anoka Republican and longtime chiropractor who heads the House Health and Human Services Finance Committee.
Abeler says he committed no ethics violations and the provisions are minor items in an $11 billion health budget. Democratic Rep. Tom Huntley says he sees no ethical conflict but disagrees with Abeler on the role of chiropractors in medical care.
