BOSTON (AP) - Jacoby Ellsbury got the winning hit

for the second night in a row, homering with two outs in the ninth

inning to give the Boston Red Sox a 4-3 walkoff win over fading

Cleveland. The Indians fell to the .500 mark after dropping their

10th in 13 games.

 


CHICAGO (AP) - Derek Jeter had five of the New York Yankees'

season-high 23 hits in their 18-7 laugher over the Chicago White

Sox last night. Robinson Cano homered and drove in four

while Curtis Granderson had five RBIs for the Yanks, who remain a

game back of Boston in the AL East.

 


MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Brewers continue to be torrid at

Miller Park. Powered by Casey McGehee's three home

runs, the Brewers ran their NL Central lead to 3-1/2 games over St.

Louis with a 10-5 win, their eighth win in nine games at Miller

Park.

 


SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco Giants regained a

one-game lead over Arizona atop the NL West after stopping their

five-game losing streak with an 8-1 win over the D-Backs. Ryan

Vogelsong improved to 9-1 by holding Arizona to one run on five

hits while striking out seven in his six innings of work.

 


AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Tiger Woods is listed as a 20-1 longshot by

one British betting shop as he makes his first competitive golf

appearance in three months today at the Bridgestone Invitational.

Woods has won a record seven tournaments in his pro career at

Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, where the Bridgestone is

being played.


 

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Former NFL defensive star Bubba Smith, who

found a successful second career as an actor, has died in Los

Angeles at age 66.

Los Angeles County coroner's spokesman Ed Winter says Smith was

found dead yesterday at his Baldwin Hills home. Winter says he

didn't know the circumstances or cause of death.

Police spokesman Richard French says the death does not appear

to be suspicious.

Smith spent five seasons with the Baltimore Colts and two

seasons each with Oakland and Houston. He played college ball at

Michigan State.

As an actor he played such characters as a police officer in the

"Police Academy" series.
