SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Arizona has climbed into a tie with the
defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants in the
National League West following the Diamondbacks' 6-1 win, their
second in two nights over the Giants. Paul Goldschmidt hit his
first career homer, a two-run shot, and Justin Upton also had a
two-run homer.
DENVER (AP) - The Philadelphia Phillies are threatening to run
away with the National League East. The Phils stretched their lead
to eight games over Atlanta by blanking Colorado 5-0 for their
fifth straight win, while the Braves were dropping a 9-3 game in
Washington to the last-place Nationals.
CHICAGO (AP) - Mark Teixeira set a major league
record by homering from both sides of the plate for the 12th time
and Phil Hughes pitched six innings to send the New York Yankees to
their fifth straight victory, 6-0 over the fading Chicago White Sox
in a rain-shortened game in Chicago last night. Teixeira broke a
tie with Eddie Murray and Chili Davis, who each homered 11 times
from both sides in the same game.
NEW YORK (AP) - The NBA, which has locked out its players in a
labor dispute in its second month, had a busy legal day, filing an
unfair labor practice charge with the National Labor Relations
Board and a lawsuit in federal district court in New York. The
league accuses the NBA Players Association of being uncooperative
in negotiations.
NEW YORK (AP) -Increasingly playing hardball, David Stern thinks
the only people NBA players are threatening by going overseas is
themselves, and dismissed the threat of Deron Williams
and others playing overseas as weakening the NBA's product.
Instead, Stern says such defections could divide the union and
possibly jeopardize players' contracts if they were to be seriously
injured.
