Natl. Sports Headlines for Tuesday, Aug. 2nd:


SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The Arizona Diamondbacks erupted with five

runs in the sixth inning and beat San Francisco 5-2 to climb within

a game of the NL West-leading Giants. The defending World Series

champions got a double dose of bad news when left-hander Barry Zito,

who lost his last three decisions, learned he was going

on the disabled list with a sprained foot.


CHICAGO (AP) - CC Sabathia pitched eight strong innings to earn

his major league-best 16th win and the New York Yankees beat the

Chicago White Sox 3-2 last night for their fourth consecutive

victory. The Yanks moved within a game of AL East-leading Boston,

which lost to Cleveland 9-6.

 


MILWAUKEE (AP) - Nyjer Morgan slammed a three-run double in a

five-run fifth inning to spark the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-2 win

over St. Louis for their seventh straight win. The Brewers moved a

season-high three and a-half games ahead of second-place St. Louis

and five and a-half ahead of Pittsburgh in the NL Central.

 


DENVER (AP) - Pinch-hitter John Mayberry Jr. hit a game-tying

two-run homer in the ninth inning and Shane Victorino homered to

lead off the 10th as the Philadelphia Phillies overtook the

Colorado Rockies 4-3 last night for their fourth straight win. The

Phils have opened a seven-game lead in the NL East over Atlanta,

which lost 5-3 in Washington.

 


NEW YORK (AP) - Both sides in the NBA negotiations say they will

return to the bargaining table this month to try and end the

month-old lockout. Commissioner David Stern says there is

"nothing" to be optimistic about and accused the players of not

being "serious" in their bargaining efforts.
