NEW YORK (AP) - A person with knowledge of the deal says the
Jets have agreed to terms on a contract with Antonio Cromartie,
keeping the cornerback in New York after losing out on Nnamdi
Asomugha (NAHM'-dee AH'-suhm-wah). Cromartie, acquired last
offseason from San Diego, was solid for New York opposite Darrelle
Revis (duh-REHL' REE'-vihs), finishing with 42 tackles and three
interceptions. The person spoke to The Associated Press early
Monday morning on condition of anonymity because the team had not
announced the move.
UNDATED (AP) - The AL East-leading Boston Red Sox open a
four-game series tonight at home against Cleveland. The Indians
trail first-place Detroit by 2 1/2 games in the AL Central, while the
Red Sox enter with a two-game lead over the Yankees. New York is at
Chicago tonight, with the Yankees' CC Sabathia trying to become the
majors' first 16-game winner.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Minnesota Twins activated outfielder
Denard (deh-NARD') Span from the 15-day disabled list following
Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Oakland Athletics. Span, the subject of
several trade deadline rumors, will join the Twins when they travel
to Anaheim to open a series against the Los Angeles Angels on
Tuesday. Span, on the disabled list since June 9 because of a
concussion, has appeared in 56 games with the Twins, batting .294
with nine doubles, three triples, two home runs and 15 RBIs.
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Saint Louis coach Rick Majerus (muh-JAYR'-his)
had a stent inserted into his heart recently but will be on the job
for the first of several open practices beginning Monday. The
63-year-old Majerus had the procedure done in Salt Lake City.
Majerus said in a statement issued by the school Sunday night that
he felt great and was looking forward to the start of the season.
NEW YORK (AP) - Versus will be renamed the NBC Sports Network
early next year. The cable channel's parent company, Comcast, took
over NBC Universal in January, and NBC Sports' production and
programming have already been appearing on Versus. The change will
take place Jan. 2, the day NBC airs the NHL Winter Classic,
allowing for extensive promotion of the newly named network.
