Some of the contenders for the AL and NL pennants are getting
help down the stretch. The trading deadline without waivers is
today, 4 pm. Eastern, but some teams aren't waiting:
- Colorado Rockies right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez (oo-BAHL'-doh
hih-MEHN'-ehz) has been traded to the Cleveland Indians. Jimenez
was pulled Saturday night from his start after pitching one inning
against the San Diego Padres. The trade is contingent on Jimenez, a
19-game winner a year ago, passing a physical. Cleveland is sending
to the Rockies right-handers Alex White and Joe Gardner and first
baseman-outfielder Matt McBride, all minor leaguers, along with a
player to be named.
- Veteran infielder Orlando Cabrera has been traded from
Cleveland to the San Francisco Giants for Triple-A outfielder
Thomas Neal.
- First baseman Derrek Lee has been traded by the Baltimore
Orioles to the Pittsburgh Pirates for minor league first baseman
Aaron Baker.
- The AL West-leading Texas Rangers are getting some help for
their bullpen. Texas is acquiring reliever Koji Uehara (KOH'-gee
yoo-HAHR'-uh) from the Orioles, with right-hander Tommy Hunter and
infielder Chris Davis going to Baltimore.
- The AL East leading Boston Red Sox have acquired Mike Aviles
(ah-VEE'-lehs) from Kansas City and expect to use him in a utility
role. The veteran infielder was batting .222 with five homers and
31 RBIs in 53 games for the Royals
