National Sunday Sports Headlines - Peyton gets PAID

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning has a

new long-term deal in time to report to training camp. Colts owner

Jim Irsay says it's a five-year deal for $90 million with $69

million of that paid in the first three years.

WASHINGTON (AP) - It's on to the next step for the NFL and its

players, who are getting closer to a full-fledged collective

bargaining agreement. A person familiar with the negotiations

confirmed to the AP that the NFL Players Association already

re-established itself as a union, a key step to finishing the new

deal.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -One day after signing a four-year, $22

million deal with Carolina, Cam Newton smiled to the hundreds of

fans who cheered as the Heisman Trophy winner took the field

Saturday for the first time with the Panthers. Carolina is coming

off a 2-14 season and is hoping Newton is the key to the Panthers'

offensive improvement.

NEW YORK (AP) - Resting several stars in the opener of a

day-night doubleheader, the New York Yankees enjoyed watching all

those fill-ins bring home a win as they swept a twinbill from

Baltimore, 8-3 and 17-3. In the nightcap, the Yankees set a

franchise record for runs in the first inning, scoring 12 times as

Nick Swisher homered and drove in three and Robinson Cano

(kuh-NOH') had a pair of RBI singles in the 12-run inning on 10

hits that lasted 40 minutes.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians have acquired pitcher

Ubaldo Jimenez (oo-BAHL'-doh hih-MEHN'-ehz), a 19-game winner a

year ago, from the Colorado Rockies to help them make a push for

the playoffs. The trade for three minor leaguers and a player to be

named is contingent on the 2010 All-Star passing a physical.
