Marvin Gammelgaard



Marvin (Red) Gammelgaard, age 84, of Wabasso, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Redwood Area Hospital. Mass of Christian Burialwill be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 from St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Wabasso. Burial and Military Honors by the VictorHirsch American Legion Post #263 of Wabasso will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday July 11, 2011 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Wabasso with Parish Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday July 11, 2011 Arrangements are being handled by Sunset Funeral and Cremation Association of Wabasso and Echo.

Marvin (Red) Ludvig Gammelgaard was born on July 30, 1926 on a farm in Redwood County Minnesota to Jens and Carrie (Jensen) Gammelgaard. He went to school at District #14 and then to Wabasso High school. He left school and joined the United States Marines in 1943 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He served in WWII and fought in the battles at Okinawa and Palalau. When he returned from service he worked on the home farm for 2 years then for Klabunde Construction until 1954 when he started a plumbing and heating business with his brother-in-law Bob Beckman until he went into business for himself. He retired from the plumbing business in 1988. Marvin married Margie Beckman at St. Anne’s Catholic Church on September 26, 1950. He was a member St. Anne’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, Commercial Club and was a fireman. He also delivered Meals on Wheels. Marvin enjoyed working with wood having built several houses in Wabasso. He also loved gardening, bowling and was an avid fisherman.Marvin passed away at the Redwood Area Hospital in Redwood Falls on Thursday July 7, 2011 at the age of 84 years, 11 months and 7 days. He is survived by his wife Margie of Wabasso, children; Anne Marie(Robert) Peterson of Lancaster, CA, Karen Necker of Dyersville, IA,

Joseph Gammelgaard of Lakeside, OR., David Gammelgaard of Redwood Falls, Janet Shaw of Oskaloosa, IA, Kristin Gourneau of Independence, KS and Steven Gammelgaard of Brandon, SD, grandchildren; Nicole Peterson, Eric Guetter, Jessica (John) Perez, Melissa Smith, Jeanna Gammelgaard Amy Jo (Tommy) Glover, Ryan Gammelgaard, Cory Gammelgaard, Joey Zimmerli, Tyler (Amanda) Allen, Matthew Gourneau and Luke Gourneau and 11 great grandchildren. Also surviving are siblings; Nora Kempfert of Redwood Falls, Arnold (Delores) Gammelgaard of Osseo, Ellen (Harold) Schweim of Mankato and Agnes (Peter) Schue of Gaylord.

He is preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Martin, brother, Donald, sisters; Kristine Larson and Alma Welsand and step-brother Bernard Montgomery. Blessed be his memory.
