William Ruhr





William “Bill” Ruhr, 87, of Morgan died peacefully on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 9, 2012 from St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Morgan with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday, from 4 until 7 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, all at the church. Visitation will continue on Monday at the church for one hour prior to services.

William Joseph Ruhr, the son of Theodore “Ted” and Mary (Kline) Ruhr, was born July 26, 1924 in Castlewood, South Dakota. He was baptized, received his first Holy Communion, and was confirmed at St. John’s Catholic Church. Bill also received his education at the parochial school there. He was inducted into the United States Army and served, from 1941 until 1944, in World War II campaigns in Central Europe, Northern France, Africa, the Middle East, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Following his honorable discharge, Bill returned to the Castlewood area.
 
On February 4, 1948, Bill married Mathilda Magdeline Kockleman at St. Leo and they settled on a farm in Jordan. They then moved to Wabasso where they started their family. The Ruhrs later relocated to Morgan where Bill was employed by St. Michael’s Church and School as the custodian for 23 years. He was an active member of St. Michael’s where he belonged to Catholic Aid Association. Bill was also involved in various community organization, including the Sherman-Bohn V.F.W. Post. He enjoyed gardening and yard work, grilling out, and woodworking. Bill loved visiting and spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
 
He is survived by his children Roger (Rosie) Ruhr of Marshall, Mary (Bob) Schmidt of Morgan, Lonny (Colleen) Ruhr of Morgan, and Lori (Paul) Ruhr of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and his sister Margaret (George) Heibult of Watertown, South Dakota. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Mathilda, five brothers, and four sisters.
