Senator Gary Dahms (R - Redwood Falls) announced today that he will run for re-election in the new Senate District 16. The new district includes all of Brown, Lac qui Parle, and Yellow Medicine Counties, and parts of Chippewa, Lyon, Redwood, and Renville Counties.
About half of the new District 16 is now represented by Senator Dahms as part of the existing Senate District 21. Most of the remainder of the new district is currently represented by Senator Gary Kubly (DFL – Granite Falls) who announced his retirement after 10 years in the Senate.
"I am excited about meeting the people in Senate District 16," Dahms said. "It is a geographically large rural district with common interests. Economically, agriculture is big in the district with productive farms and strong agriculture related businesses. With my background and as Vice-Chair of the Senate Agriculture and Rural Economies Committee, I look forward to working with the district’s farmers and agricultural businesses."
"There are strong industries in the district which diversify the economy, provide jobs, and give us economic strength," continued Dahms. "I pledge to work with those industries to keep them competitive and growing. I am anxious to begin talking with the people of the district."
Prior to being elected to the Senate in 2010, Senator Dahms served as a Redwood County Commissioner. He graduated from Redwood Falls High School and attended the University of Minnesota where he earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural business administration. He is also a graduate of the Blandin Community Leadership Program.
Senator Dahms owned and operated Dahms Insurance Agency for 25 years. He has taken his appreciation for his community and turned it into a lifelong dedication of service and volunteerism. When he is not working at the capitol in St. Paul, Senator Dahms lives in Redwood Falls with his wife of 36 years, Barb. He has two grown children, Michelle and Michael, and one grandchild. He is also an active member of the First United Methodist Church
