Redwood Area Hospital ranks high with patients

Redwood Area Hospital ranks No.2 for patient satisfaction among Minnesota’s critical access hospitals, according to a report from the Minnesota Department of Health. The ranking is based on patient responses to surveys about the quality of their hospital experiences. Only one other critical access hospital in the state received more quality points for the survey of patients’ hospital experiences.

Redwood Area Hospital measures patient satisfaction by contracting with an independent organization to mail, receive and tabulate a federally prescribed survey, called the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, which asks patients about their experience during a recent hospital stay.

“Our commitment to providing the highest quality healthcare to area residents is reflected in the high patient satisfaction and top ranking we’ve received,” says Jim Schulte, Redwood Area Hospital chief executive officer.  “We are constantly measuring, reporting and analyzing our performance in order to identify goals for improvement.”

This latest report reaffirms the hospital’s performance as described through a community perception survey that polled a representative sample of area communities this summer. In the telephone survey commissioned by the hospital, Redwood Area Hospital was identified with the best reputation by a three-to-one margin against the hospital receiving the next highest response. In addition, two-thirds of area residents listed Redwood Area Hospital as their primary hospital.

“Our most recent surveys included comments ranging from ‘This was the best hospital experience I’ve ever had!’ to ‘I would highly recommend the services of your hospital,’” Schulte said. “But, until now, we did not have a good measure of how our patient responses compared with other similar hospitals. This first attempt by the state department of health to compare and rank hospitals with peers across Minnesota gives us an additional sense of how we stack up.”

In the past, the local hospital has celebrated a number of consecutive years on the Gold Standard list that recognizes the top three percent of critical access hospitals across the country for financial performance.

“This latest data confirms Redwood Area Hospital can be just as proud of the quality care provided as we are of the financial performance,” says Chico Jensen, hospital commission chairman. “It is a tribute to all the great staff and physicians associated with our local, community-owned hospital.”
