A court appearance for Chad Monson of Willmar yesterday was delayed as prosecutors work to combine the two clusters of charges against him.
Monson was to have made his initial appearance in Kandiyohi County Court yesterday on 16 new explosive, weapons and drug charges against him. The 46-year-old has been in custody since January 30th when SWAT teams raided his home on the southern edge of Willmar and found guns and drugs.
Monson was not allowed to posses weapons because of a previous drug conviction, and 8 charges were filed against him. Later, a SWAT team searched a shed he used for storage for his excavating business and more drugs and weapons were found, including machine guns and sawed off shotguns, as well as pipe bombs.
Sixteen more charges were filed and his appearance yesterday was cancelled and moved to April 11th, which is also the date set for a pre-trial conference on the other 8 charges against him. Monson’s application for a court appointed attorney was rejected, and he is represented by private attorney Daniel Mohs of St. Cloud.
Monson remains jailed on half-a-million dollars bail.
