Helen Mae Gewerth age 92 of Morton passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Sunwood Good Samaritan Care Center in Redwood Falls while surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Morgan. Visitation will be held from 4:00 – 8:00 pm Tuesday at the Redwood Valley Funeral Home in Redwood Falls. A rosary service and prayer service will be held at 4:00 pm Tuesday. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Interment is in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent at www.stephensfuneralservice.com. Helen was born April 19, 1925 on the family farm near Belview to George & Cora (Adsit) Kohls. She graduated from Belview High School in 1944. On April 29, 1947, Helen was united in marriage to Joseph Gewerth at St. John’s Catholic Church in Morton. Together the couple farmed Southeast of Morton for 49 years. They also enjoyed travelling around the world. Helen also began working at Gil-Mor Manor in Morgan in the 1970’s. She retired in December 1985. In 2006, Helen moved to Morgan and later to Redwood Falls. Helen was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church where she was a member of the CCW, served as secretary, and sang in the church choir. She held the position of secretary of the VFW, and was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary in Morgan and Redwood Falls. Helen served as an adult leader of the Golden Gopher 4H club, and was also a member of the neighborhood Chatter Club. She was also the mascot for the local Cootie Club. In her earlier years, Helen enjoyed canning. She enjoyed baking and taught her family how to bake. She was famous for her handmade rolls. Helen loved being outdoors, spending time by the creek and feeding the birds. In her spare time, she liked to crochet, embroider and cross stitch.
Helen is survived by her children: Joseph Jr (Maria) Gewerth of Virginia Beach, VA, Jean (Gene) Hillesheim of Morton, Steve (Cindy) Gewerth of Springfield, David Gewerth (special friend Donna) of Morton, George (Nancy) Gewerth of Hutchinson, Robert (Susan) Gewerth of Morgan, Theresa (Mark) Nelsen of Sunburg, Richard (Cheryl) Gewerth of Morton and Scott Gewerth of Willmar; 28 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren; 19 great great grandchildren; sister-in-law Evelyn Gewerth of Morton; cousins Florence and Inez Kohls both of Belview; and many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Joseph, grandsons Shawn Gewerth and Emmanuel Gewerth, brother Donald, sister Marjori Byram, sisters-in-law: Claudine Kohls, Betty Elg, Mary Lou Bailey, Leona Gewerth; and brothers-in-law: Pete Byram, Alvin Gewerth, Donald Gewerth and Ken Elg.
