The Renville City Council last night gave final consideration of a new smoking regulation ordinance which opens the door to construction of a new Casey’s Convenience Store.
Casey’s wants to build at a spot on Highway 212, but the current smoking ordinance prohibited Casey’s from selling tobacco products, which Casey’s officials have said is a deal-killer. The ordinance said anyone who sells tobacco must be at least 1000 feet away from schools, churches or anywhere children might frequent. Considering the size of Renville, a 1000 foot tobacco free zone would pretty much include the whole town.
The city crafted a new ordinance that does away with the buffer zone. It has had its first and second reading earlier this fall and last night was its third and final reading. In addition to Casey’s, Dollar General is also building a store and would like the option of selling tobacco products.
