Trial Starts Tuesday for Gibbon Teacher Accused of Relationship With Teen

Trial begins Tuesday for the kindergarten teacher from Gibbon accused of having a months-long sexual relationship with a teenage boy whom she tutored.

Forty-year-old Megan Jo Johnson is charged in Sibley County District Court with criminal sexual conduct in the third degree.

According to the complaint, the 17-year-old was an illegal immigrant and had been abandoned by his father in Gibbon. Johnson began helping the boy with food and clothing, got him enrolled in school and acted as his tutor and interpreter. That progressed into a sexual relationship starting in January of 2016.

The encounters often happened in her classroom at Prairie Lutheran School before Bible study, as the boy was seeking to become a member at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The encounters also happened during tutoring sessions at the Winthrop home of the family that became the teen’s legal guardians.

Johnson self-reported the relationship in March of 2017.  Police say when the boy was questioned, he told them that Johnson was the aggressor who started the sexual encounters and when they began he was afraid and confused.
