Winthrop Child Care Loses Appeal on License Suspension, Provider Accused of Abusing Baby

The day care license at a facility in Winthrop will remain under suspension.

The license at Kids Korner was suspended on September 7th after a baby there was allegedly abused. That was appealed, but the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) has now affirmed the suspension.

One of the providers at Kids Korner, 49-year-old Tammy Jo Petzel of Arlington, stands accused of abusing a six-month-old baby.

Petzel is charged with third degree assault for allegedly leaving the infant with red marks and bruising on his stomach and legs. A pediatrician with specialized training on such injuries concluded that they were caused by child abuse, based on the severity and location.

The other provider, Tracy Kehr, was not present when the alleged abuse happened. Petzel has denied causing the injuries.
